Questions and Comments

We had a lengthly discussion some months ago where many of us were against anonymous Gnomes editing the site. We believed people editing should do so with their own name.

And I believe the same even more about an SVN checkin account. I cannot see why AndreUlrich cannot just check in as himself??

I also prefer to have a human contact to talk changes through with, but I suspect the real problem is that there's a lack of explaination supporting the need for this account?

I'm sure Andre will correct me if I get this wrong.

The purpose of this account is to support Pootle (translation tool). Andre and I had a chat with the Pootle folks yesterday.

Pootle has it's own user authentication and rights management system, which is pretty hard to integrate with anything else (though they are moving to Django in a future release). In the interim there is no alternative to creating and managing users within Pootle. Pootle has a subversion integration that allows users to check in their work, but pootle always does these checkins as the "pootle" user (or another single user you nominate). However it does support adding a username in the checkin comment, which seems to be the best we can do vis-a-vis traceability.

The proposal ATM is to have a gnome who's sole aim in life is to accept these checkins, and match the Pootle users as closely as possible to the Foswiki users.

Only "language coordinators" will be able to check in.

Thing is, that Pootle will provide a nice interface and workflow for the translation effort. It will work on top of an SVN checkout and manipulate these files. At some point the work can be submitted, either through regular SVN commits or by pushing a button. The commit messages can be modified in a way, so that actually the user who push the commit button can be included like:

"Commit from %s by user %s, editing po file %s. %s"

What I don´t know is, if it is possible to let language coordinators only committing their language file and not the whole checkout. Therefore I thought the following workflow would be ok at least for the first shot:

  1. everyone can suggest translations and correct errors
  2. every language gets one or two coordinators who also get a Pootle account
  3. language coordinators review language changes
  4. reviewed language changes will be committed every half hour

I have been through the requirements and spoken with the pootle folks; I'm satisfied that Andre's plan is a good one. So I added the gnome as a subversion user. All checkins as the gnome should identify the true contributor in the comment (pootle supports this)

My original concern was based on the initial proposal text that looked like the original wikignome idea

Using a sort of "system" account for Poodle where the author is identified in checkin text is not a concern to me at all

So naturally I support and encourage Andre to go ahead with that.
