Checklist plugin not working

I've installed the Checklist Plugin and the Smilies Plugin got installed automatically as a dependency. Smilies do appear at places where a %CLI% is in the topic. But they don't change state at all.

There was a dependency message on the first install attempt:

Foswiki::Plugins::SmiliesPlugin version >=0 required
 -- perl module is not installed
 -- Description: Required

what perl module is missing? Is there a more detailed error log that would tell me this?

I suspect it is one related to the Smilies, because that dependency gets addressed, and then I don't see the error again if I try to re-install.

Is there something global I shhould check?

There is this message at the end of the plugin installation, but I don't know how to check on the specific things can coul dbe missing:

"Before proceeding, review the dependency reports of each installed extension and resolve any dependencies as required.

• External dependencies are never automatically resolved by Foswiki.
• Dependencies noted as "Optional" will not be automatically resolved, and
• CPAN dependencies are not resolved by the web installer."

Any suggestions welcome.
