This question about Installation of Foswiki: Answered

What is cron needed for - anything vital?

Hi FOSWiki Suport,

I wish to install FOSWiki on a machine that I do not have root access on. I have checked all the systems requirements and know I meet them all, including Perl modules required and correct version numbers. However, I don't have access to cron scheduler. What does FOSWiki use cron to do? If I don't have access to cron, will it break FOSWiki as a whole, or just the functionality that uses it?

Thanks and regards, Mark

Cron is not necessary for normal operation of foswiki - it is used to do regular mailouts for the MailNotify topics, and to clean up the session files - which you can also do manually.

I'm a little surprised that you don't have access to cron - what happens when you run cronatb -e ?

but yes, it'll work - I run most of my local testing and development foswiki's without cron.
