Additionally, it tells the user to customise that shipped System/SlideShowPlugin/slideshow.css - which can't be right. Can it?

in my trunk checkout, I have a slideshow.css.gz, but no slideshow.css, whereas in 1.1.4, we have shipped a slideshow.css but not a slideshow.css.gz

so something is off somewhere

These are derived files. We only checkin the _src or .uncompressed, see Item8531.

pseudo-install correctly generates slideshow.css.gz for me, have you tried re-running pseudo-install?
