• the default way of searching for webs is slow by design. there have been some core fixes that will be available in Foswiki-2.1.7 but not anytime before
• reading preference settings NOSEARCHALL and SITEMAPLIST is astonishingly expensive with rather limitted use value. a better way to hide webs from a list is
  • use of access control
  • use include and exclude parameters in %FLEXWEBLIST
• there still is a need to cache the list of available webs as these quite rarely change. so recomputing the same list over and over again is pointless
