Most templates take a default of the Current web followed by the Main and then the TWiki web.

I tried putting MailInContribTemplate in the Current web. It doesn't work.

I suspect this means that you can't keep the TWiki web clean of per-site modifications, and that you can't have per-web templates.

Can someone verify the problem?

The contrib just uses a loadTemplate('MailInContrib') so the standard rules for finding templates apply.

Check SkinTemplates for more informatiom.
