Please do not get me wrong. I like the idea, to have the design with Pattern-Skin. But let's make it a good improvement, not a step back.
But why not use this layout in the tasks web now? Wouldn't that be a good compromise, that will lead to further improvements?
Thanks to Koen for the great work so far. I am pretty confident, that this will lead to a cool design, that we can use for the core, that we ship later also.

Just for your info, we know the test.foswiki.org is not done yet. People that developed it have been away on xmas.
And the past days very busy also on the release work - which I am extremely happy about.
But yes, it would be good now to get the foswiki.org site converted to running Foswiki for many reasons that have nothing to do with skins or looks.
I think it is important that the foswiki.org site does look good and very different to the "old project". And even if the login link is not at the top, and even if the side bar does not look exactly as the Nat skin, we will have a very different design. We just need the glitches in the top bar resolved and some of the other details Martin has pointed out.
The design is actually worse when you look at Internet Explorer 6. Then also the top bar menu shows problems with the background area showing white gaps.
For the Tasks web one of the reasons we had to change was that the other skin did not expand correctly to show the bugs tables. This is always an additional problem with right bars vs left bars.
If we cannot make this work a solution can be to use a left bar only in tasks web. It is possible to define at a web level by adding the right setting including some simple CSS files via
WebPreferences.
At our Motorola site I even have individual topics where large tables are needed and I have on single topics disabled the left bar and instead added a small navigation "bar" at the top that enables navigating away from the topic.
Lots of improvements have been made. Closing until new reports.
